I used to think that the Afghan War was more about the revenge and less about the Afghan people. After hearing Dr. Taylor's lecture, Afghanistan : Peace Building, I now think that it is more about US revenge, its more about the Afghan people. The 911 incident was a major catastrophe, the World Trade Center collapsed into ruble, many civilians died on the plane and in the building. It was hard to imagine. I remember watching it on the news when it happened, my brother woke all of us up, and I saw the World Trade Center falling apart.
Following the 911 incident, it was the beginning of the War on Terrorism. It has affected many countries in the Middle East, and lead to the Iraq War. The Afghan War started in 2001, the US and the UK launched an invasion to capture Osama Bin Laden, wipeout the Al-Qaeda, and remove the Taliban regime. With the removal of power, the Taliban insurgence were formed. Waves after waves of attacks, many Afghan people suffered from it.
Dr. Taylor is working with his organization, Future Generations Afghanistan. As his people come into Afghanistan to aid the people, the people feel uneasy. They lost their trust in outsiders, they feel that the US and other nations coming into the country was the major problem. Many say they should leave, but would everything be peaceful? Terrorism, and the insurgence will gain power and once again bring terror into are lives. The Afghan people now lost their trust and wants the foreigners to leave, they also can't trust within each other. Each Afghan people create bonds and trust with one another, they will create a sub-clan. They only trust one another if they are in the same sub-clan. Dr. Taylor is using what the sub-clan has and build back Afghanistan from it.
I feel that this whole situation is a mess. The US caused alot more problems now by waging war on terror and going into a country and try to fix it. I feel that after this incident, the viewpoint of the Middle Eastern people has change. People start become prejudice with a brown skin tone. Many people will say if you are Middle Eastern, you are a terrorist. Also the viewpoint of the religious faith has been altered. I don't believe war or violence will help solve anything. Going to war with Afghanistan was not really a great way to resolve this issue. It is Osama Bin Laden and Al-Qaeda who their after, not the whole Afghanistan. I feel many innocent people are plunged into this chaos which they have no reason to be in the first place. By going into the country and try to fix it, wasn't a big help to the Afghan people. It made matters worse. It destabilized the country, and the Taliban insurgency was formed. This is why the Afghan people lost thier trust to the international nations. The US only thinks about war war war, violence isn't the only way to resolve an issue. Iraq was another victim of US mind of violence. I feel that George W Bush isn't doing a great job as being a president, i feel he is best of being in the military ranks. Obama in the other hand, is helping to deal with issue diplomatically, i strongly would want Obama to win the election and soon the war on terror will come to an end.
Dr. Taylor mentioned that, as a whole, people are "veering to the wings of religious thinking". I strongly feel that people tend to use violence or war to solve problems or hide the fear they have. They think if their country holds a strong military, nothing could harm them. With the popular video game consoles, many game developers use war, violence, blood, fighting and so on as their main theme or the fun factor. These alter peoples perspection of how people think of another.
